Most of the smaller diesel engines will utilize a four-stroke diesel cycle, as they don’t require a huge load to haul. However, the larger engines will find that they can produce twice as many combustion events per revolution, which in turn will produce more power.

Diesel engines are massive. There’s no doubt about that. They’re massive to the point that it takes over 20 V-8 car engines to match the amount of horsepower that a standard two-stroke engine is capable of. The reason behind this design is that most trains require a continuous amount of horsepower. And, with the design, the engine can pump out 3,200 horses without any significant drops. Think of it this way, if you ran your car on that power, it probably wouldn’t last more than a couple days.

The Generator System

The engine itself is also attached to a hefty generator system. At peak power, this generator can power a neighborhood of over 1,000 houses without breaking a sweat. That’s some serious wattage that’s going on within a system. This power system goes into four electric motors that are located in the trucks. The power is circulate throughout the train, providing adequate surges to vital components that require it. Google scientists have used machine learning to keep the sizes of image small without any corresponding reduction in quality. According to the scientists, the resulting file size is 75% smaller than the original image.

This new technique is RAISR. It stands for “Rapid and Accurate Image Super-Resolution.” Normally, when resizing an image, it loses quality. RAISR can take a low-quality image and increase its resolution. It does this while maintaining detail during the upsampling process. It enhances the end image by using filters.

Almost anyone who has used an image editing application knows what happens when you take a smaller image and try to make it bigger. The result is a blurry and sometimes blocky image. When comparing images processed with RAISR, the gain in quality is clear.

The RAISR system has been trained using machine learning. The training involved feeding low-quality and high-quality version of the same image. This way, it was able to figure out which filters worked best to restore the most amount of detail.

Just a few years ago, artificial intelligence was the subject of science fiction. Now, not a single day goes by without some AI or machine learning driven advance. Imaging – The primary example is of Google using machine learning to teach a computer how to upscale an image. The training used several thousand images. First, it analyzed the full-size image and then an image about a quarter of its size. It was then able to take any smaller image and produce a larger version with as much or more detail.

Language – Google also uses machine learning extensively on languages. The primary use so far has been in translation. For that to work, however, it required training on understanding the languages and then translating.

This is a small sample of how AI is becoming the next big thing in tech. So far, Google is in the lead with IBM not so far behind. Apple, Amazon, and Microsoft are all building out machine learning capability.
