A question that has been asked about Twitter over the years is whether it is a technology or media company. The answer, in not being so simple, is simply a variation of both – according to Dick Costolo, CEO of Twitter.

He explains further, in saying, “I think of us as a technology company because I think the future of the company is in building on an extensible platform that allows third-party developers and companies to add value to Twitter in a way that is accretive to Twitter and is accretive to our users. I don’t need to be or want to be in the content business.”

To support his statement, he also mentioned that is not in the content business because instead of having reporters or a newsroom, almost half of Twitter’s employees [1300 in number] are engineers who are working on building the technology around which Twitter runs on while also continuously creating new features for its users.

In fact, he also wishes to encourage companies and developers to build products and tools inside the Twitter platform – instead of creating external Twitter apps.

Speaking of new features, Twitter as a whole, is also evolving into something different by experimenting with media-like products some of which NASCAR and Olympics-branded pages. Twitter currently also has employees that help V.I.Ts such as athletes, media outlets, politicians and celebrities to use its features well. Thanks to this content available by V.I.Ts, “engagement rates on ads” are also great as opposed to traditional Web ads.

Yet even though Costolo still maintains the fact that Twitter has and always been a communication platform, experts think that these ‘experiments’ being conducted make Twitter more of a media company.

Summary: Open office layouts are trendy but that might be for good reason. There are a number of advantages to using this layout over a traditional office setup.

When your company sets out to create things people will be interested in purchasing, you need to go back to the source: the employees who work for you. Since your employees will likely spend the majority of their workday in the office, which is why it would be wise to carefully design and decorate the work environment.

Over the past decade you have probably heard about companies radically changing how they approach their workplaces, in hopes of boosting productivity and driving profits. Perhaps one of the ideas that has gained the most popularity in different offices throughout the office is the concept of an “open office.” Open office layouts have started to replace cubicles and individual offices but is making the switch worth it? There are a number of pros that could make the open office a reasonable approach to how you and your employees work each day.

Serendipitous Moments

One benefit of an open office layout is the possibility of serendipitous moments taking place. When you are working in your own office with the door closed, the chances of you interacting with someone or hearing what your coworkers are up to are quite low. When you work alongside your coworkers, there is a chance that you will get to talk with employees with different backgrounds or from different departments.

You can learn from these conversations and this level of communication can increase collaboration. This can also make it easier to speak people higher up who you otherwise would rarely interact with. All of this can help establish a stronger sense of community that could currently be lacking from your workplace.

Flexible Layout

Another advantage of using an open office layout is how flexible it is. You can easily place your employees at tables in an open space and, if you ever need to rearrange the room, you can do so with ease. As your company expands and you bring more people in, you can move furniture or people around to accommodate.

If you ever needed to expand your working space or rearrange the layout in a more traditional office, you would need to purchase more offices or even move to a larger building to fit everything and everyone.

This flexibility is good for strengthening the workplace and helping people meet one another but it also offers up some financial advantages. Not having any walls and being able to reformat the layout of the office can save you a lot of money on construction or rental expenses.

2017 is the third consecutive year that LG reports that its top of the line phone is not selling well. This year LG places the blame on “weaker than expected premium smartphone sales and increase in component costs.” Last year, the G5 was to blame for a “weak quarter” and in 2015 the G4 sales “fell short of expectations.” All attempts by LG to break into the premium smartphone market are failing.

As a company, LG is doing okay and does not rely on smartphone sales. The company has three divisions: Home Entertainment, Home Appliances, and Automotive components that are all doing well. In fact, LG has never made a profit on its smartphones and still hasn’t given up.

LG saw Samsung as its primary competitor and built the G6 to beat the S8 to the market. It was the decision to use the year-old Qualcomm Snapdragon 821 processor, that was the downfall of the G6. By going for an older processor, LG thought it has a three week lead over the S8, however, by the time the phone was available in the US, Samsung was accepting pre-orders for the S8.

Most reviews say that the S8 is just a better-built version of the G6. By trying to beat the S8 to market, LG sacrificed using the latest processor, ending up with a phone that cost as much as the S8 but was a generation behind in CPU.

There are so many brands with so many models of routers that it is becoming harder and harder to choose. The boxes advertise feature after feature with no clear explanation of what they mean. Here are some points to note when buying a new router or access point:

Antennas

Do not be fooled by routers and other devices with several large antennas protruding from all sides. None of those make any difference to the signal strength of the device. Look at the technical specifications and see how many antennas are inside the device. Usually, three or more high gain antennas are what we want in a wireless device.

OS

Most vendors ship their devices with their OS. The problem with vendor specific software is that they rarely update them. Some vendors use open source operating systems like DD-WRT or OPEN-WRT. Such operating systems are feature rich and are maintained by the community.

Features

When it comes to routers, we want more than just internet connectivity and wireless. Features that most families find useful will include parental controls, bandwidth controls, device specific blocks and even a mini-firewall. More is not always better, but look out for features that you will find useful.

Build

Lastly, look at the build quality of the device. Cheap plastic construction will not last long and eventually become brittle over time. A good sturdy router will likely have quality components inside, which should last well beyond the warranty period.

Just a few years ago, artificial intelligence was the subject of science fiction. Now, not a single day goes by without some AI or machine learning driven advance. To be clear, when we talk about AI today, we refer to machine learning. It is using artificial intelligence to teach computers without any actual programming. Even in such a short span of time, it is already changing the way we do things.

Let us look at a few examples of machine learning implementation:

Sales – Platforms like salesforce.com are using machine learning to help sales teams target leads. Using data gathered from years of sales, the system could flag which leads have a higher probability of translating into sales.

Imaging – The primary example is of Google using machine learning to teach a computer how to upscale an image. The training used several thousand images. First, it analyzed the full-size image and then an image about a quarter of its size. It was then able to take any smaller image and produce a larger version with as much or more detail.

Language – Google also uses machine learning extensively on languages. The primary use so far has been in translation. For that to work, however, it required training on understanding the languages and then translating.

This is a small sample of how AI is becoming the next big thing in tech. So far, Google is in the lead with IBM not so far behind. Apple, Amazon, and Microsoft are all building out machine learning capability.
